Mayumi Konno solo exhibition "One"

From the end of 2019 to the present, we have been conscious of numbers, such as the number of infected people and the number of deaths. During this long period of time, I have had to reconsider how I perceive numbers of people.

In addition to the number of people reported in the news, we are constantly exposed to a huge amount of information about numbers, such as the number of followers and ratings on social media. We are overwhelmed by the constant stream of information about numbers, and our senses gradually become numb. Before we know it, numbers that we once felt were large start to seem very small.

Even if an individual is only a small "1" in a larger number, that "1" may be large from the individual's perspective and represent everything to that person. On the other hand, it may only be one of several accounts that the individual has. Even if it is the same "1" that represents a person, the way it is seen will change depending on what number it is in and from what perspective it is viewed.

The works in this exhibition incorporate the layering effect used in digital illustrations into acrylic paintings, creating artificial, multi-layered images that express the form of existing as "1" among the vast amount of information about the number of people that flows in every day.
